Face Oil vs. Serum: Do You Really Need Both? (The Difference Explained)

If you are trying to simplify your routine (which we love), it is tempting to look at Step 3 (Serum) and Step 4 (Oil) and ask: "Do I really need both? Can't I just pick one?"

It’s a fair question. They are both liquids. They both go on your face.

But scientifically, asking if you need Serum or Oil is like asking if you need a glass of water or a lid for the bottle. They do completely different jobs.

At Joyful Naturals, we separate them for a reason. Here is the biology of why they are teammates, not competitors.

Split screen comparison of a wet, plump sponge versus a dry, shriveled sponge next to a heater, illustrating skin dehydration.

Serum = The "Drink" (Hydration)

Your Glow Getter Serum is a Humectant. Its job is to grab water molecules (using Hyaluronic Acid and Aloe) and pull them deep into your skin cells. It is like giving your skin a tall glass of water.

Texture: Watery, light, absorbs instantly.

The Problem: If you only use serum, that water can evaporate into the air within minutes, leaving your skin tighter than before.

Oil = The "Seal" (Moisture)

Your Nourish and Glow Face Oil is an Emollient/Occlusive. Its job is not to add water, but to trap it. Because oil and water don't mix, putting a layer of Jojoba oil over your damp skin creates a breathable safety seal.

  • Texture: Rich, golden, protective.

  • The Problem: If you only use oil on dry skin, you are sealing a dry sponge. You might look shiny, but your skin will still feel dehydrated underneath.

The Magic is in the Layering

This is why the Joyful Glow System is non-negotiable on the order:

1.  Hydrate First (Step 3): You wet the sponge with the Serum.

2.  Seal Second (Step 4): You put the lid on with the Oil.

When you use them together, you create a "Hydration Sandwich" that lasts all day. When you split them up, you break the cycle.

Prove It to Your Pores

You don't have to take our word for it. You can feel the difference.

Try the "Half-Face Test." Tonight, do your full routine on the left side of your face. On the right side, skip the serum and just use oil. Wait 10 minutes. The serum side will feel plump and bouncy. The oil-only side will feel heavy and surface-level.

We are so confident in this duo that we back the full Joyful Glow System with our 60-Day Love Your Glow Guarantee No returns required.
